OSPF Neighbors

OSPF neighbor relationship vs adjacency

There is a distinction between OSPF neighbors and OSPF adjacent neighbors. OSPF neighbors are routers running OSPF and have one or more common connected subnet. OSPF adjacent neighbors, however, are routers that established adjacency by agreeing on specific OSPF parameters:

  • area type
  • area number
  • subnet number
  • subnet mask
  • Hello timer
  • Dead Interval
  • OSPF authentication type
  • OSPF authentication password (or digest)

Once OSPF neighbors become adjacent, their goal is to have a unique Link State database on all neighbors. This is called “synchronizing the link state database LSDB”. And it is done by the mechanism of exchanging LSAs.
